A Better Choice

The primary aspects of our program include

  • Providing services to low and moderate income residents within census tracts 47, 48, and 49 (focus areas by the City of Memphis/Housing and Community Development Division

  • Outreach and recruitment efforts utilizing the “street team” outreach approach combined with involvement of area ministers, community leaders, and employers

  • Informational sharing activities to be conducted in churches, community sites, work places, shopping areas, and recreational sites

  • Community events providing opportunities to lean how to improve and/or expand current literacy skills

  • Individual literacy assessments

  • Community events providing opportunities to improve literacy skills using day-to-day activities, focusing on medical, safety, parenting, consumer education, employment, and citizenship programs

  • Promote and support individuals seeking to improve their basic literacy sills, reading comprehension levels, work place literacy skills, and/or their abilities to complete educational and/or employment training classes

  • Recommendations and/or referrals to community resources

  • Award and recognition events which promote individual achievement and success and encourage other residents to take advantage of the program
